There is no single feature that makes a notebook sustainable. Instead, consider the whole product.

A vegan notebook, for example, does not necessarily mean an environmentally friendly notebook. Vegan simply means that animal-derived materials have not been used. Many vegan leather products are made primarily from synthetic materials.

Find out whether the materials are recycled, renewable, recovered or newly produced.

The source matters because a material's environmental story does not begin when it becomes a finished product. It begins much earlier, with where and how it was obtained.

3. Consider how long you will use it

Durability is an important part of sustainable design.

A well-made notebook that you use for years can be a more considered purchase than one that needs to be replaced frequently.

Ask yourself whether the notebook is designed for everyday use and whether the cover and binding are made to last.

4. Look for refillable or reusable designs

A refillable notebook can extend the useful life of the cover considerably.

Rather than replacing the whole notebook when the pages are full, you can keep the cover and replace the pages.

5. Look beyond the product

Sustainability also includes the people who make the product.

Consider whether a brand is transparent about where its products are made, who makes them and how it approaches social responsibility.

A more sustainable product should consider people as well as materials.

Are vegan notebooks sustainable?

Vegan does not automatically mean sustainable.

Leaf Leather is made from teak leaves collected after they have fallen in sustainably harvested teak forests in Northern Thailand.

The leaves are soaked, dyed and steamed to make them flexible. They are then arranged, compressed and bonded onto non-woven fabric before a thin protective film is applied to provide durability and water resistance.

The natural character of the leaves remains visible, including their distinctive veins and variations in texture.

The result is a material that looks and feels like conventional leather, ages beautifully and lasts for years. 

It also means that every notebook cover has its own natural character.

Why refillable notebooks are worth considering

Our A5 and A6 Leaf Leather notebooks have refillable covers.

Once you have filled the pages, you can replace the notebook insert while continuing to use the same cover.

This is a simple design choice, but it changes the lifespan of the product.
